Loose surface rock does not provide the same support as a properly packed base. AB-3 is useful below farm roads, driveways, feedlot pads, and construction access where traffic or equipment will keep crossing the area. In eastern Kansas, expansive clay can swell in wet conditions and crack as the ground dries, while western ground may drain more readily.
AB-3 packs into a dense layer when compacted, with its varied aggregate material settling together to create structural support. Begin with prepared subgrade and compact the material before applying the finish layer above it. That approach matters after flash rain, when unworked material can shift at the surface and the soil below may lose firmness.

Solid lane base, a few big chunks
Put down about eighteen tons of road base for the lane connecting the two pastures, which used to be nothing but ruts after rain. Compacted well with the tractor tire pressing it down over a few passes. A handful of chunks were bigger than I expected for base material, closer to fist size, but nothing the grader blade couldn't handle.
