Picture a cubic yard as a cube that is 3 x 3 x 3 feet. Bulk materials are ordered by cubic yard or ton, so you need to turn your project area into one of those measures. These calculators handle that step for 24 products, using each material's actual cubic-yard weight. Shredded mulch comes in at about 600 lb per yard. Crusher run is 3,000 lb per yard. They fill the same-sized cube, yet crusher run weighs five times more. That difference makes a product-based calculator more useful for tonnage than a general aggregate tool.

Calculation method
Start by finding the area: multiply the length and width in feet. Change depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12, then multiply it by the area to get cubic feet. Divide the result by 27 to get cubic yards, then apply the material density to find tons. This is the calculation used when project dimensions are provided by phone.
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)
An incorrect depth can throw off the estimate. It is easy to measure the area and make a rough depth guess, but a 10 x 10 patio at 2 inches takes half the stone required at 4 inches. If you need guidance, look at the depths listed on the material page for that job.

Find the right material
- Build a new driveway or parking pad from the ground up: crusher run or road base forms the bottom, with driveway gravel or #57 stone as the finish. Calculate the layers separately.
- Use clean #57 or drain rock at 12 inches or more for pooled water, wet trenches, and French drains.
- Put shredded mulch around plants. Choose river rock for a border that does not require refreshing.
- For sparse or bare grass, spread 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil before laying sod or seeding.
- Use fill dirt to bring up a low spot or close a hole. Reserve topsoil for just the top 4 to 6 inches.
- Paver patio: use a compacted base beneath exactly 1 inch of bedding sand. Separate calculators help estimate each layer.
- For playground fall areas, maintain pea gravel at 9 to 12 inches deep.
- Install riprap over fabric in 12 inches or more where a bank or shoreline is washing away.
