Eastern Kansas clay can swell during a wet spring and crack in dry weather, while western ground is often sandier. A flash rain can also move loose surface rock. Those conditions make the supporting course under a driveway, farm road, or feedlot pad as important as the material visible on top.
With its broken edges, 3/4" Crushed Stone settles into a firm, load-bearing course when compacted. Solid drainage layer, one cosmetic flaw
Put four tons under a new stamped concrete patio for drainage before the pour, and the contractor said it was exactly the size he wanted for base work. Only nitpick is a handful of chalky white pieces mixed in that stick out against the rest of the gray stone, purely cosmetic since it's getting buried anyway. Patio's held up fine through one full year now.

Patio base compacted better than expected
Called Kansas Rock Supply for six tons to use as base under a new paver patio behind the house, since the crushed concrete our neighbor used settled unevenly after a year. This stone locked together tight once we ran the plate compactor over it twice. Pavers went down dead level and haven't shifted through a full summer of thunderstorms.
