Kansas ground changes from expansive clay in the east to sandier soils farther west, but flash rain can affect either setting. Install Railroad Ballast beneath the working surface on a feedlot pad, farm route, or similar heavy-use area when the job needs an open-bearing stone course. A compacted material selected for the surface can go above it when the route requires a finer finish. That keeps ballast doing the job it is made for instead of asking it to serve as the final driving layer.

Great drainage, kicked up plenty of dust
Put down eight tons of railroad ballast for a farm road connecting two pastures that used to flood every spring. Drains instantly now, no more standing water even after a hard rain. Only downside is how much dust came off the pile while we spread it with the tractor blade, had to wait for the wind to die down before we could see straight.

Ground Pumped Up Worse Than Expected
Our equipment lot west of Miltonvale sits over some of the softest ground on the place, gumbo that pumps up after real rain. Ordered railroad ballast figuring the six inch lift the yard usually recommends would handle it, same as our neighbor's lot. Once the tri-axle dumped the first load and we ran the skid steer over it, the ground pumped up worse than either of us expected, soft enough that six inches wasn't enough here. Ended up doubling the lift to twelve inches in the wettest third, and Kansas Rock Supply had a second load out two days later without any hassle.
