With use, Riprap maintains a plainly stoned surface on Kansas ground exposed to moving water. Flash rain can concentrate along a terrace, waterway, bank, or culvert area, particularly where eastern clay sheds water across a disturbed site. Riprap is intended to armor those vulnerable surfaces with heavy stone rather than leave soil open to runoff.
Set the material where the water route is exposed, not across broad areas that only need regular road or pad aggregate. On sandier western ground, drainage may differ, but a concentrated flow can still erode a bank or channel. This makes Riprap useful around waterways in the Flint Hills, near the Kansas River or Arkansas River, and on farm drainage work. It is also appropriate for shorelines and slopes that need erosion protection. For smaller erosion-control stone or a heavy base layer, compare the relevant crushed stone material instead.

Solid riprap, a couple pieces oversized
Put six tons of riprap along the bank where our pond spills over during heavy rain, replacing dirt that kept sliding into the water. Locks together well and stopped the erosion completely after one wet spring. A few pieces came in bigger than I expected to handle by hand, closer to the size of a microwave, so we needed the tractor bucket for those instead of just muscling them into place.

Pond Bank Stops Losing Dirt
Our farm pond west of Enterprise kept losing dirt off the bank every time we got a hard rain. Riprap went in along the waterline, about six tons, and the tandem eased down our pasture track to dump it in two spots. It has held through spring runoff and a couple of gully washers since, no new slumping anywhere.
